Date of Birth

15 March 1899, Shannonbridge, Offaly, Ireland

Date of Death

26 May 1979, Solana Beach, California, USA (emphysema)

Birth Name

George Brendan Nolan

He was a licensed pilot. You can see him landing an airplane in The Great Lie (1941).

Son of a British officer, George Brendan Nolan (as he was originally known) was a minor IRA guerrilla during the Anglo-Irish War (1919-1922), and fled Ireland with a price on his head

Served on Michael Collins' ASU (Active Service Unit) assassin/hitmen squad (as "George Nolan", his real name), although he could not have been more than 16 or so.

Was to have starred in the film, Death of a Scoundrel (1956), but took ill after a large party scene with many, many extras had been filmed. Rather than an expensive re-shoot, the producers left the scene (with him visible) in the final cut. He was replaced in the lead by George Sanders.

He had two children, Barry and Suzanne, with his 4th wife, Janet.

Had a tumultuous two-year long affair with Bette Davis, his co-star in Jezebel (1938), Dark Victory (1939), The Old Maid (1939), The Great Lie (1941) and In This Our Life (1942).
