Date of Death

23 February 1976, Hollywood, California, USA

Got into show business on his musicianship, appearing on vaudeville and in stage musicals, and once even led his own band. He broke solidly into films after Mae West caught his act and put him in a couple of her vehicles -- She Done Him Wrong (1933) and My Little Chickadee (1940).

Provided sidekick comedy relief in scores of late 30s and 40s "B" westerns opposite sagebrush stars Tex Ritter and Johnny Mack Brown.

Dennis Morgan

Date of Birth

20 December 1908, Prentice, Wisconsin, USA

Date of Death

7 September 1994, Fresno, California, USA

Birth Name

Earl Stanley Morner

Dennis Morgan was born Stanley Morner in the small town of Prentice, Wisconsin. His first jobs in Hollywood were mostly bit parts, but he scored big after playing opposite Ginger Rogers in Kitty Foyle: The Natural History of a Woman (1940). He starred in films like My Wild Irish Rose (1947)_, God Is My Co-Pilot (1945) and The Very Thought of You (1944). He teamed up with buddy Jack Carson to do Royal Flush (1946), Two Texas Knights (1948) and It's a Great Feeling (1949). His engaging performance as seaman "Jefferson Jones", with Barbara Stanwyck and a wonderful supporting cast, has made Indiscretion (1945) a holiday favorite. Morgan retired in the late 1950s, but did cameos now and then. He and his wife were married for 61 years, and he passed away in 1994. He also had three children, Stanley Jr., Kristin Morgan and James. He truly is one of the legendary actors of the 1940s and his movies will never be forgotten. I hope he will always be remembered as a great star.

In 1943, was originally cast to play Rick Blaine in Casablanca (1942), but made Thank Your Lucky Stars (1943) instead.

Dennis and Jack Carson made at least 15 projects together, including Thank Your Lucky Stars (1943) and The Hard Way (1943).

Later became an astute businessman, with extensive business holdings.

First under contract to MGM, he subsequently moved to Paramount and then Warner Bros., where he became one of the top movie singers.

Received his big musical film break singing "A Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody" in the now famous glossy finale of The Great Ziegfeld (1936). His voice, however, was dubbed by Allan Jones.

Traveled during his early days with an operatic company singing in productions of "Faust" and "Carmen".

Attended Carroll College in Wisconsin and belonged to the college football team. Later studied voice at the Wisconsin Conservatory of music in Milwaukee and the American Conservatory in Chicago.

Appeared in high school plays and the glee club.

His children are named Stanley Morner, Kristin Morgan and James Morner.

Sang "Home is the Sailor" at friend Errol Flynn's funeral (October 1959).
