In the first series he was smarter than Tony, but as the series progressed he became more and more stupid and childlike, regularly calling Tony 'Tubbs'. Despite remaining on the radio series throughout its six year run, when the TV series began he was not required

One aspect of Bill's life which writers Galton and Simpson picked up on for "Hancock's Half Hour" was that, between the ages of 5 and 19, he genuinely lived in the New South Wales city of Wagga Wagga.
