He was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in 1952 and awarded Knight Bachelor of the Order of the British Empire in 1985 for his services to drama.
He was a British army Major during WW2 and then played one in 'The Guns of Navarone'.
He was nominated for Broadway's 1956 Tony Award as Best Featured or Supporting Actor (Dramatic) for his role in the play, "Tamburlaine the Great.".
He formed his own theatre company, 'Compass' which toured the provinces introducing theatre to new audiences.
