Born Dorothy Howe, the young actress was chosen as the female winner of Jesse L. Lasky's "Gateway to Hollywood" radio talent search in July, 1939. Her reward was membership in the Screen Actor's Guild and the stage name Virginia Vale. The male winner of the same contest was Kirby Grant.
After retiring from the screen, Vale worked 30+ years for Lockheed and was also an ice skating judge.
