USA Civil War South Carolina Series of Eight letters ( two incomplete ) about 50 pages , written by ‘ C N A ‘ to an aunt in Scotland: three from Columbia 1863-66 and five from Charleston 1867-68 Of particular interest is a letter of 12 pp folio June 1865 graphically describing Sherman's march to the Sea and the hardships endured in South Carolina " I cannot find words to convey to you the faintest idea of all we have gone through and suffered " There is much on the attack on Columbia , the firing of the city and the atrocities committed by the Yankees " next day they commenced to shell the city without a moments notice, everyone became wild with terror , left there homes... remaining on the streets weeping trying to get out of the way of the shells " Mr Williams made a great many things but the Yankees took them from him & threw them in the flames... our house was saved by being next to the Catholic church " But the hospital was not so lucky " they set fire to the beds with ill people in them - friends pleading to spare them , but they set fire again and again " when Sherman thought almost everything had been destroyed he ordered better troops to be sent in and the others sent out, not a chicken was left... the Yankees had taken every mouthful " ...The writer stresses the family's personal plight " all that we owned was in slaves & Confederate Bonds & money , we have nothing left , God only knows what is to become of us " Included with these letters is a fifty dollar Confederate bank note and a portrait of soldier on glass which is broken but still in excellent condition & taped together on reverse. Sundry items of photo's etc.
